What is Balsam Fir Essential Oil?

Lets start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Balsam Fir Essential Oil

Family:  Pinaceae
Origins:  Eastern North America
Other Names:  Canadian Balsam, Balsam Tree, American Silver Fir, Balm of Gilead (oil)
Description:  A tall evergreen tree
Extraction:  Steam distillation from needles
Botanical Part Used: Needles

Principal Constituents:  Mostly monoterpenes, pinene, phellandrene, and esters.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Possible skin sensitivity
  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Do not use near flame, heat or sparks
  • Do not store at temperatures above 120F (49C)
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Suggested Uses

Anxiety

Balsam Fir Essential Oil can help calm anxiety, stress, depression and nervous tension.

Before bed take a relaxing bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts.

Follow up with a foot massage using a couple drops of Balsam Fir Oil

Then diffuse 20 drops into the bedroom for a nice calming sleep.

Arthritis

Balsam Fir Essential Oil is very soothing for chronic pain, rheumatism and arthritis. 

It has antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties which support your immune system, soothes pain and relaxes aching muscles. 

It also has the ability to stimulate blood at the surface of your skin which flushes out toxins and assists with healing.

  1. mix a few drops with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut in a 50:50 dilution and create a compress
  2. place the compress over the area of concern 
  3. cover with a damp cloth followed by a dry cloth
  4. apply heat using a heating pad to increase the absorption.

Massage areas of concern in your body with a 50:50 blend of Balsam and carrier oil. In the case of small areas such as your fingers, you can apply the oil undiluted directly on the painful area.

Balsam Fir Essential Oil is a strong antimicrobial that can be used for colds and flues.  It can also help you clear your sinuses. 

Diffuse 10-15 drops into the room.

Add a drop to a teaspoon of honey and lick it slowly.
