Healthy Blood Pressure

Of the many natural ways to maintain/regain a healthy blood pressure, essential oils are a favorite of mine.

They are safe, natural and can be used individually or in synergy with other oils to effectively attack the problem from different angles.

Essential oils are known to have a positive effect on blood pressure by:

  • dilating your arteries,
  • acting as antioxidants for oxidative stress and, of course,
  • by decreasing emotional stress.

We will discuss several essential oils which will assist with healthy blood pressure in a moment, but first I want to cover some supporting information. Please stay tuned!

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms you may experience include dizziness, headaches, lightheadedness, fainting and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Causes of High Blood Pressure

Some causes of high blood pressure include:

  • Alcohol
  • Birth control pills
  • Caffeine
  • Heavy-metal poisoning
  • High-salt diet
  • Inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Stress

You can probably relate to one or more of the items on this list, and since you will not likely experience any symptoms of a blood pressure increase, it would probably be worth your while to purchase a ...

Blood Pressure Device

Have you ever gone to see your doctor for a checkup and s/he told you that your blood pressure was too high?

Have you heard of the term "White Coat Syndrome"?

Most people can be anxious when visiting the doctor because they fear something may be wrong. This emotion will often increase your blood pressure and even though your doctor will make allowances for that, the effect may be larger than expected.

Many people are mistakenly prescribed blood pressure pills as a result of these erroneous readings.

My advice to you is to purchase your own portable blood pressure device and take your own readings periodically at times when you are relaxed.

Blood Pressure Range

So you have your new device and you have just used it for the first time. How do you know if your readings reflect a healthy blood pressure?

The first number of a blood pressure reading is called the systolic blood pressure. A normal systolic reading should be within the range of 100 - 129. This reading represents the pressure created when your heart pumps. (After age 50, this reading is the most important)

The second number is called the diastolic blood pressure and it should be within the range of 60 - 79. This reading represents the pressure between pumps when your heart is at rest.

If your readings are normally within these ranges you have healthy blood pressure. Congratulations!

But, you are considered to have high blood pressure if your readings are consistently over these ranges. Periodic readings above or below these ranges are OK and simply reflect temporary events rather than an ongoing problem.

High blood pressure puts a strain on your heart/arteries, is a major risk factor for a stroke and can be a cause of chronic kidney disease.

Fortunately there are many natural, healthy ways to lower your blood pressure so pharmaceutical options (complete with possible side effects) need not be your only course of action.

OK, lets talk about some essential oil examples for attaining a healthy blood pressure. Lets talk about ...

Oils for Healthy Blood Pressure

note: If you have high blood pressure avoid using lots of cinnamon, peppermint, rosemary or other highly stimulating oils over an extended period of time. Occasional use is fine.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense is one of the best essential oils to help maintain a healthy blood pressure and has been used to reduce stress levels and promote mental clarity.

Frankincense has a calming effect on your body and also regulates your heart.

The Principal constituents of Frankincense Essential Oil are monoterpene hydrocarbons which act as a powerful anti-inflammatory. Monoterpene has been known to reduce the swelling of blood vessels and to reduce pain.

Whenever you feel nervous or tense try rubbing a few drops on the bottoms of your feet. I have found it easiest to drop Frankincense oil on one foot and then use it to rub the other foot so I don't get any on my hands.

Frankincense Essential Oil can also be diffused for 5 minutes at any time during the day to combat depression, anxiety and stress.

Helichrysum Essential Oil

Helichrysum Essential Oil has hypotensive properties which improve the condition of your blood vessels by reducing inflammation, encouraging smooth muscle function and promoting healthy blood pressure.

Helichrysum is also known for its ability to dissolve blood clots and promote healing of surrounding tissues.

Defuse 5 to 10 drops of Helichrysum Essential Oil after a hard day at work to benefit from its calming and uplifting properties.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli Essential Oil is a warming oil which promotes growth by stimulating new cell generation, the production of red blood cells and increased circulation.

The oil is known as a phlebotonic (stimulates circulation in your legs) and is ideal for strengthening the walls of your blood vessels and improving circulation.

Patchouli can be blended with an equal amount of carrier oil and massaged into the affected area to stimulate circulation.

Diffuse or vaporize 5 to 10 drops of patchouli to create a sense of clarity and help relieve anxiety, stress and depression. These calming properties are very effective for relaxation and it is often used during prayer and meditation.

Apply it topically in a 50:50 blend with a carrier oil to overcome anxiety or nervous exhaustion. Simply massage it into your hands and feet for a quick pick-me-up which affects your entire body.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil has antidepressant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties which can calm your nervous system and relax your body. It reduces your heart rate and increases your blood circulation

Are you suffering from poor circulation; concerned about slow blood flow to your brain; cardiac fatigue after exercising? Try mixing with a carrier oil in a 50:50 blend and massage it over your limbs, back and abdomen.

Vetiver Essential Oil

Vetiver Essential Oil can help establish and maintain a healthy blood pressure because of its sedative and relaxing properties.

It is very effective at calming nervous irritations, anger as well as anxiety, epileptic and hysteric attacks.

Vetiver Essential Oil has a very relaxing aroma which can help relieve feelings of depression and nervous tension as well as insomnia.

  • Add some grounding to your body by massaging a couple drops over your heart center.
  • Take a nice relaxing bath with 10 - 15 drops with some Epsom Salts added to the water.
  • Diffuse Vetiver to relax yourself
  • Rub a couple drops on your palms and inhale or apply it to your shirt collar
  • Put a couple drops on your pillow case when you go to bed

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is one of the favored oils for helping to maintain a healthy blood pressure and can provide you with relief from stress and negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, depression, fear and frustration.

Many drugs commonly prescribed for high blood pressure come with some seriously adverse side effects. Now you have access to this completely natural solution which has no side effects when taken in small quantities.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil has been proven to provide relief from stress and anxiety and can calm your nerves so as to put you in a relaxed state of mind.

Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil helps control high blood pressure as well as an irregular/racing heartbeat. Diffuse a drop with other aromatic oils. (see list below)

Recommended Oils for Healthy Blood Pressure:

Blends for Healthy Blood Pressure

Essential oils can be used individually (as above) to treat high blood pressure but the great thing about oils is you can safely use a combination of several oils in a blend to attack a problem from different directions.

There are many combinations to choose from but I will just outline a few here.

Fragrant Balm

Using an empty bottle, add equal amounts of Clary Sage and Frankincense. Add to this mixture the same amount of fractionated coconut oil. (total essential oil = total coconut oil)

You can rub this mixture on your temples and under your nose to relax and clear your mind.

Diffuser Blend

Mix 5 drops each of Bergamot, and Ylang-Ylang and diffuse into the room at any time during the day for a calming effect.

Massage Blend

Combine 5 drops Lavender, 10 drops Mandarin, 20 drops Marjoram, 10 drops Ylang Ylang.

Use 2 or 3 drops undiluted, for a regular reflexology foot massage to help control stress.

Shake 7 drops of this blend with about 2 ounces of coconut oil and use it as a massage blend to relax your body.
