Helichrysum essential oil has been used for various respiratory complaints, skin conditions, headaches, liver diseases and allergies.

What is Helichrysum Essential Oil?

Lets start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Helichrysum Essential Oil

Family:  Asteraceae (Compositae)
Origins:  Native to the Mediterranean area, especially eastern North Africa. Cultivated now in Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain, and France
Other Names:  Immortelle, everlasting, St. John's herb. Helichrysum italicum and Helichrysum angustifolium are the same.
Description:  An aromatic herb with brightly colored daisy-like flowers that become dry as the plant matures, yet the dried flowers retain their bright color.
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation
Botanical Part Used:  Fresh flowers and flowering tops

Principal Constituents:  Nerol and neryl acetate (30 - 50%), italiviones, geraniol, pinene, linalool, isovaleric aldehyde, sesquiterpenes, and others.

This aromatic oil comes from a flowering yellow herb native to the Mediterranean area.

The method used for extraction is steam distillation.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Possible skin sensitivity
  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Suggested Uses

If you suffer from tinnitus, spread a drop around the outside of your ear and pull it in different directions to assist with absorption. Repeat frequently and daily until relieved.

For non-infectious swelling or redness in and around your eyes apply a couple drops of Helichrysum essential oil on your cheekbones.

According to Kurt Schnaubelt recoveries have been phenomenal applying a blend of 1% Helichrysum, 15% flax seed oil and 84% hazelnut oil 2 to 3 times a day for about 3 to 6 months.

Use as an additive to your sunscreen to increase the protection from sun exposure; to your face lotion or cleanser (1 or 2 drops) to tone and rejuvenate your skin.
