Helichrysum essential oil has been used for various respiratory complaints, skin conditions, headaches, liver diseases and allergies.

It has been used effectively for cold and flu, tinnitus, bruising, nerve damage and as a calming oil for emotional blocks.

Used in the healing process it is famous for its ability to eliminate bruising and assist with the healing of damaged tissue.

What is Helichrysum Essential Oil?

Let's start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Helichrysum Essential Oil

Family:  Asteraceae (Compositae)
Origins:  Native to the Mediterranean area, especially eastern North Africa. Cultivated now in Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain, and France
Other Names:  Immortelle, everlasting, St. John's herb. Helichrysum italicum and Helichrysum angustifolium are the same.
Description:  An aromatic herb with brightly colored daisy-like flowers that become dry as the plant matures, yet the dried flowers retain their bright color.
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation
Botanical Part Used:  Fresh flowers and flowering tops

Principal Constituents:  Nerol and neryl acetate (30 - 50%), italiviones, geraniol, pinene, linalool, isovaleric aldehyde, sesquiterpenes, and others.

This aromatic oil comes from a flowering yellow herb native to the Mediterranean area.

The method used for extraction is steam distillation.

Methods of Application

• Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
• Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
• Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
• Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution
  

Suggested Uses

If you suffer from tinnitus, spread a drop around the outside of your ear and pull it in different directions to assist with absorption. Repeat frequently and daily until relieved. Never put essential oils in your ear.

For non-infectious swelling or redness in and around your eyes apply a couple drops of Helichrysum essential oil on your cheekbones.

Anti Aging

A massage of a 50:50 blend of Helichrysum and carrier oil can be effective for:

• neuralgia

• strained muscles

Bruising

Helichrysum Essential Oil has anti-hematoma properties and is famous for its ability to eliminate bruising and assist with the healing of damaged tissue. (see "Healing" and "Inflammation" below)

Dilute with a carrier oil and apply directly to unbroken skin immediately after an injury.

Burn Treatment

Apply Helichrysum Essential Oil undiluted to your burn for immediate relief and no scaring.

Helichrysum possesses anti-inflammatory and tissue-regenerating properties.

Cold and Flu

A daily foot rub with 50:50 helichrysum essential oil and carrier oil can boost your immune system and prevent infections.

Apply across the balls of both feet. 

Emotional Balance

Defuse Helichrysum Essential Oil after a hard day at work to benefit from its calming and uplifting properties.

Adding Peppermint Oil to the mix will increase your ability to focus; You will feel a sense of security and emotional freedom come over you as your emotional blocks seem to drift away.

Headache/Migraine

Helichrysum Oil, known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, has been used for ages to treat headache or migraine.

Mix with a carrier oil in a 50:50 blend and massage your temples, neck and forehead.

Healing

Helichrysum essential oil can be applied undiluted to assist in healing tissue and nerves or to prevent/reduce a hematoma (bruise).

Known for its ability to dissolve blood clots and promote healing of surrounding tissues.

According to Dr. Daniel Penoel, Helichrysum is the most powerful agent to use for a hematoma.

Hemorrhoids

Helichrysum Essential Oil is very effective at healing hemorrhoids.

It has a natural anti-inflammatory effect on your body and is well known for its ability to promote healing of surrounding tissues.  

Mix a few drops in a 50:50 solution with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut or aloe and coconut and apply externally (without massaging) a couple times a day. 

Inflammation

Helichrysum Essential Oil has a natural anti-inflammatory effect on your body. Rub a few drops directly on arthritis, sore muscles and bruises.

Nerve Pain

Mix 3 drops of Helichrysum Essential Oil with a teaspoon of water and massage the area to relieve the pain of neuralgia.

The oil can also be mixed with an equal amount of carrier oil such as coconut oil.

Multiple treatments over a long period of time will be needed to heal.

Pain Management

A massage of a 50:50 blend of helichrysum and carrier oil can be effective for:

• arthritis pain
  
• muscle aches and pains
  
• neuralgia
• rheumatism
  
• shingles
• sprains
  
• strained muscles

To assist your respiratory system and address the following conditions massage with a 50:50 blend of helichrysum and carrier oil:

Shingles

Helichrysum Essential Oil is very effective for treating shingles pain & inflammation. It is also very effective at repairing damaged nerves that may linger after treatment is complete.

Mix the oil with a carrier oil 50:50 and massage the effected area.

Skin Treatment

Helichrysum essential oil works well for any skin condition where inflamed tissue needs to be calmed and regenerated.

It is a very gentle oil and can be applied to children suffering from inflammation and dermatitis. it is also very moisturizing and will work well when skin is dry and cracking.

For the following skin conditions create a 50:50 blend with helichrysum and a carrier oil or apply undiluted over a small area.

Known for its healing properties it works great as an initial application for larger injuries before bandaging in preparation for transport to a location were professional care is available.

Its anti bruising properties make helichrysum essential oil a great addition to any sporting team first aid kit.
