What is Insomnia

If you have difficulty sleeping 3 or more nights a week over a 4 week period then you can say that you are suffering from insomnia. It is important for your health that you get about 7 hours of sleep per night. (Children need 9 hours) 

This common sleep disorder, which affects 1 in 5 people, can affect your quality of life and even your health. 

If you or a loved one is concerned about this problem then perhaps you will be interested in a natural insomnia remedy like essential oils.

Single Oils For Insomnia

If you have a severe issue with insomnia I recommend that you consult with a medical professional because there may be some serious health issues that are interfering with a healthy sleep schedule.

If you don't believe there is any immediate danger to your health I have some oils to suggest you try. Perhaps you can even refer some of these remedies to your doctor.

Balsam Fir

Balsam Fir can be used to calm anxiety, depression, insomnia and stress. Native Americans were known to use fir needles to stuff pillows in order to provide a nice peaceful sleep.

Put 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts and take a nice hot relaxing bath.

Massage areas of tension in your body with a 50:50 blend of Balsam and carrier oil.

Diffuse 20 drops into the room. This also works well for times of meditation

Bergamot Essential Oil

If you are struggling with depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia or nervous exhaustion, try putting 15 drops of Bergamot Essential Oil in a cup of Epsom salts and take a relaxing hot bath.

Alternatively diffuse 20 drops into the air or inhale from a cotton ball placed inside your pillowcase.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage Essential Oil has the ability to relax you both mentally and physically.

For a peaceful night’s sleep, diffuse the oil using an aromatherapy essential oil diffuser or apply a couple drops to a tissue and place it on your pillow. For even better results include some Roman Chamomile with your Clary Sage.

Lavender Essential Oil

Benefit of Inhaled Lavender and Sleep Hygiene in College Students with Sleep Problems

Lavender Essential Oil has been used for thousands of years in the bath to calm and relax the mind and body. Mix 15 – 20 drops in a cup of Epsom salts and add it to your bath water. Try this at bed time to promote relaxation prior to going to sleep.

Massage a couple drops on the soles of your feet at bed time if you have problems sleeping through the night.

  • Before I learned this I used to wake up in the middle of the night to find my wife reading a book. Since I learned this trick I don't wake up anymore; problem solved ... Just kidding..

    I mean my wife sleeps through the night with no problem.

Orange Essential Oil

Try pampering yourself with a hot bath using 15 drops of orange in a cup of Epsom salts. Add the combination slowly to the water after filling the tub so the aroma will be released gradually.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

For an insomnia remedy that improves a restless sleep, reduces irritability and increases patience: 

  • add a few drops of Roman Chamomile oil to some Epsom salts in a relaxing bath, 
  • diffuse it twice a day, or 
  • massage a 50:50 blend of Roman Chamomile and carrier oil on the back of your neck, your sinuses, chest, shoulders, abdomen and feet.
  • Take the same 50:50 blend in a gelatin cap once a day with a meal.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood Essential Oil works great as an insomnia remedy.

Add a few drops of Sandalwood Essential Oil to a cup of Epsom salts in a relaxing bath to relieve insomnia.

Rub a couple drops on your forehead to promote relaxation

At bed time, diffuse 20 drops of chamomile oil into the room to calm your mind and fight insomnia.

Massage a 50:50 blend of Sandalwood and carrier oil on your hands and feet to ease negative emotions and relax.

Tangerine Essential Oil

Try pampering yourself with a hot bath using 15 drops of tangerine oil in a cup of Epsom salts. Add the combination slowly to the water after filling the tub so the aroma will be released gradually.

Aromatically, tangerine oil can help provide a positive mood by calming your mind and body. It will help dismiss any feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and irritability:

  • Diffusing 20 drops into the air will soothe your nervous system and reduce stress and tension which are major causes of insomnia
  • Apply 2-3 drops of oil on a tissue and place it on your pillow when you go to bed to uplift your mood, relieve nervousness, and dismiss those unwanted thoughts 
  • Rub 2-3 drops of diluted Tangerine oil into your palms and inhale when you are feeling nervous or are experiencing uneasy feelings

Vetiver Essential Oil

Vetiver Essential Oil has a very relaxing aroma that also relieves depression and nervous tension and by extension, is also known to help with insomnia.

Before bed time take a relaxing aromatic bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts and follow up with a foot massage of Vetiver and carrier oil at a 50:50 ratio.

When you are ready to crawl into bed, diffuse 20 drops into the room to continue your relaxed state.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang can be used as an insomnia remedy.

Take advantage of its sedative qualities by blending a small amount with other oils (see sample blend below) and:

  • add 15 drops to a cup of Epsom salts in a relaxing bath
  • massage it on the bottoms of your feet
  • diffuse 20 drops into the room
