Natural Hair Care

When it comes to natural hair care, there are numerous essential oils to choose from. They are safer to use and just as effective as conventional hair care products.

Also, thanks to the high concentration in each essential oil bottle, they last longer and are much cheaper than any of the traditional treatments you will find in the store.

Perhaps now is your chance to make a healthier choice.

As you will soon see, the oils we recommend for your natural hair care can provide much more than just healthy, beautiful hair.

Essential Oils for Natural Hair Care

OK, here is what I have for you so far. For information about other benefits of each of these oils, click on the links which follow their description.

Lavender Essential Oil

2016 study - Hair Growth-Promoting Effects of Lavender Oil in C57BL/6 Mice. Results indicate that LO has a marked hair growth-promoting effect, as observed morphologically and histologically.

Not only has Lavender Essential Oil demonstrated hair growth promoting effects but it is also able to increase the depth of hair follicles and thicken the thermal layer.

Lavender oil also has antimicrobial properties so it can combat bacterial and fungal disorders.

Massage Lavender into your scalp to

  • moisturize your skin and hair
  • control dandruff and scalp acne
  • balance sebum production
  • improve blood circulation
  • promote hair growth
  • prevent hair loss
  • heal minor injuries from scratching

Mix 8 - 10 drops with a couple tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and massage it into your scalp. Cover your head with a towel and leave it on all night for best results. The oil will also help provide a restful sleep and you can wash it out in the morning.

Lavender is one of my favorite oils and has many more uses than just natural hair care.

For more information about this wonderful oil visit my page on Lavender Essential Oil.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil is a great treatment for oily hair due to its drying and clarifying properties.

It is also antimicrobial and antiseptic so it can assist with dandruff and acne issues.

Lemon oil can be mixed with a couple tablespoons of a carrier oil and rubbed into your scalp or in a warm water rinse to reduce excess oil in your hair.

For more information see my page on Lemon Essential Oil.

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Known for it's healing properties, Lemongrass Essential Oil can soothe an itchy scalp and reduce dandruff while, at the same time strengthen your hair follicles and promote growth.

Massage a couple drops into your scalp or add 10 drops to your shampoo/conditioner and leave for a few minutes before rinsing.

For more information see my page on Lemongrass Essential Oil.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil is very good for people with dry skin. When applied to your scalp Peppermint will:

  • improve blood flow
  • rejuvenate your hair follicles and stimulate hair growth
  • increase dermal thickness, follicle number and follicle depth
  • cleanse and open pores
  • stimulate the flow of skin oils
  • control dandruff and lice

Add a couple drops to your shampoo/conditioner.

Create a blend - 5 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil and 2 tablespoons of warm coconut oil. Massage the blend into your scalp and leave for 15-20 minutes before washing.

Peppermint is one of my favorite oils and has many more uses than just natural hair care.

For more information see my page on Peppermint Oil.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Of the two types of chamomile oil, Roman and German, the Roman Chamomile seems to work best for hair growth.

Chamomile Essential Oil is great for natural hair care because it has the ability to condition your hair and protect it from the damage caused by pollutants in our environment.

Using this oil will add shine and softness to your hair while at the same time protecting the health of your scalp.

This oil is naturally soothing and has anti-inflammatory properties which can relieve dryness, itchiness, dandruff, psoriasis and dermatitis when massaged directly on your scalp.

It is non greasy so it can be used frequently and can be left in your hair to continue protecting you throughout the day.

To use chamomile essential oil for hair growth, create a blend using 3 drops of oil with 2 tablespoons of jojoba carrier oil. Wash your hair first, then massage the blend into your scalp.

For a conditioning rinse after washing, use 10 drops in a quart of warm water. It tends to lighten your hair color and can add a golden shine to it.

Rosemary Essential Oil

If you are pregnant, suffer from hypertension or have epilepsy, do not use rosemary essential oil.

Rosemary is one of the best oils for naturally thickening the hair. It promotes blood circulation which stimulates hair follicles and hair growth.

It is especially well known for its usage in hair care and has even been known to stimulate hair growth or to slow down premature hair loss.

It has the properties of being naturally anti inflammatory as well as properly nourishing your body's reproductive organs and hormones are key in issues of hair loss.

Try mixing a few drops with your hair care products or even with a little water and apply it to your scalp every day to combat dandruff as well as dry, itchy scalp and flaky or greasy hair.

To increase the thickness, mix 5-10 drops with about a teaspoon of warm Aloe Vera and massage it into your scalp for about 1 minute. Leave it in your hair for at least a half hour prior to taking a shower. This will help block Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes mail pattern baldness as well as thinning hair in females.

It also works great against a lice infestation or, mixed with a little water and sprayed on your skin/clothing as a mosquito repellent.

For more information see my page on Rosemary Essential Oil.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is a very popular oil which has been used in the treatment of almost any skin problem including those associated with natural hair care.

It is well known for several purposes connected with natural hair care:

  • It moisturizes the scalp which relieves itching
  • It has antimicrobial & anti-fungal properties that help resolve fungal infections as well as scalp acne & bacterial growths
  • It unclogs hair follicles and promotes normal flow of skin oils
  • It's considered the best remedy for dandruff

For Hair Growth - Blend 2 – 3 drops with 2 tbsp of a carrier oil like coconut or sweet almond oil and massage your scalp. Wait for 15 - 20 minutes then shampoo. This is a strong oil so if you have sensitive skin and you feel a slight burning sensation you can apply straight carrier oil to the area.

For Dandruff or Acne - Add 5 drops to your shampoo and allow it to blend for an hour before using. For a single application you may wish to add 1 drop to a tablespoon of shampoo instead.

Tea Tree is one of my favorite oils and has many more uses than just natural hair care.

For more information see my page on Tea Tree Oil

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme Essential Oil is a powerful antimicrobial which has been used for circulation and inflammation.

For these reasons it is well known for it's ability to

  • promote blood flow
  • rejuvenate your hair follicles
  • promote hair growth
  • prevent hair loss
  • treat scalp problems including dandruff

Because it is a very potent oil I recommend you use it in moderation and include other essential oils or carrier oils to create a milder blend.

Blend 2 drops of thyme with 5 drops of lavender oil in 2 tablespoons carrier oil such as Jojoba oil or coconut oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it in for 15-20 minutes before washing it out.

For more information see my page on Thyme Essential Oil

Wintergreen Essential Oil
