Essential oils can work very well as a depression remedy for occasional bouts of anxiety or depression but if you suffer from severe or frequent times of depression make sure you consult with a mental health professional.

When following the instructions for each of the oils listed below it is recommended that you do not wait until you are suffering from your depression. Get used to using the oils in good times when you are feeling energized and in good spirits. This process serves to anchor these "good" feelings by associating them with the oils being used.

Single Oils for a Depression Remedy

Bergamot Essential Oil

Because Bergamot Essential Oil can create a calming environment it is able to promote self confidence and a relaxing mood and works well as part of your depression remedy.

Do you struggle with depression, anxiety, stress or insomnia?

15 drops of Bergamot in one cup of Epsom Salts added to a hot bath may just be your ticket to relaxation and a calm mind.

I like using it in a steam room but it can also be diffused or inhaled from a cotton ball placed in your pillowcase at night.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Cypress Essential Oil

Cypress Essential Oil works well as a depression remedy.

At times of uncertainty when you are emotionally stressed or have trouble sleeping, Cypress Oil can be very calming and can provide you with a sense of stability and "grounding". 

Try rubbing some Cypress on the soles of your feet or dilute it with fractionated coconut oil and apply to both wrists.

You can inhale Cypress off of a tissue or inhale deeply from the palms of your hands.

You can also use a diffuser to disburse it into your bedroom at night.

Add 10 drops to one cup of Epsom salts and take a relaxing bath before bed time to improve your sleep.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Do you ever feel nervous or tense and in need of a good depression remedy? Frankincense can be used to combat anxiety, depression and stress in several ways.

Try rubbing a drop on the soles of your feet, the base of your neck, your forehead, your temples and the crown of your head. For best results do this several times a day.

Use a diffuser to put some Frankincense into the air at home or the office. If you are travelling take an inhaler with you so you can breathe some in whenever you feel stressed or anxious.

Add Frankincense to some fractionated coconut oil in a 50:50 blend to fill some gelatin capsules. Consume one capsule 3 times daily with some food.

German Chamomile Essential Oil

German Chamomile Essential Oil can be used against many stress related illnesses, nervous conditions, headaches and insomnia.

It is even gentle enough for children to inhale. 

To calm you child's anger and temper tantrums pin a handkerchief to their pajama collar and apply a few drops of German Chamomile for them to inhale while they sleep.

As a depression remedy it is known to relieve:

  • stress
  • tantrums 

Place a couple drops on the back of your neck as well as on your face, temples and the soles of your feet. 

Diffuse 20 drops during the day as well as in the bedroom at night.

Lavender Essential Oil

For thousands of years Lavender Essential Oil has been used to calm and relax our bodies.

A favorite application is to mix 15-20 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts and add it to your bath water for a nice, calm and relaxed mind and body. This works especially well if done prior to bedtime to promote a good sleep.

You can also try massaging a couple drops on the soles of your feet at bed time to help you sleep through the night.

Rub some oil behind your ears and on your wrists whenever you need a quick depression remedy. The relaxing/calming properties of this oil will enter your blood stream and go to work within minutes.

If you are going to travel, consider taking some oil in an inhaler for use whenever you feel anxious or stressed.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil works great as a depression remedy either alone or in combination with other oils.

One study demonstrated that aromatherapy using rosemary and lemon in the AM and lavender and orange in the PM has the potential to improve cognitive function. This was especially true in the case of patients suffering from Alzheimer's.

If you are having problems with depression, insomnia and nightmares, try taking a nice hot bath with 10-15 drops of Lemon Essential Oil in one cup of Epsom Salts before bed.

Follow up by diffusing 20 drops of lemon while you sleep.

Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram Essential Oil has been called "the happiness herb" for a very good reason. As a depression remedy it is known for its calming properties and its ability to effectively target your nervous and cardiovascular systems.

You can consume Marjoram Oil by adding it to any recipe which calls for the dried herb. Each drop is the equivalent of 2 tsp. of the herb. To be safe, make sure that you are using only clinical grade oil when consuming.

Exhaustion, insomnia and stress can be reduced by massaging a couple drops on your temples and on the back of your neck. If you have sensitive skin, first dilute the oil with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut

You can also relax and soothe your nerves by :

  • putting 20 drops into a diffuser and inhaling 
  • putting 20 drops into a cup of Epsom Salts and taking a nice hot aromatic bath
  • applying a couple drops undiluted to your hands and the soles of your feet

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli Essential Oil can be used as an effective aphrodisiac and depression remedy supporting feelings of peace, abundance and love. Pleasure hormones like serotonin and dopamine are released which help remove negative thoughts and emotions while providing a sense of clarity.

You can vaporize Patchouli using a diffuser to relieve anxiety, depression and stress. This will serve to create a sense of clarity and relaxation which is needed during meditation and prayer.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary Essential Oil can be a great depression remedy when your energy levels are low.

Try inhaling a couple drops of Rosemary from a tissue or the palms of your hands. Inhalation of Rosemary Oil is known to help remove confusion or clear a cloudy mind.

Sandalwood Essential Oil
