What is Clary Sage Essential Oil?

Lets start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Clary Sage Essential Oil

Family:  Lamiaceae (Labiatae)
Origins:  Southern Europe. Now cultivated worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean regions, Russia, the USA, England, Morocco, and central Europe.
Other Names:  clary, clary wort, muscatel sage, clear eye, see bright, common clary, clarry, and eyebright
Description:  A sturdy biennial or perennial herb about 3 feet tall with hairy leaves and small blue flowers.
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation 
Botanical Part Used: Flowering tops and leaves

Principal Constituents:  Linalyl acetate (up to 75%), linalool, pinene, myrcene, and others.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition 
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Do not use if consuming alcohol
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Suggested Uses

Caution: It can enhance the intoxicating effects of alcohol and other narcotics since it is a relaxant and sedative by nature. 

Acne

The principal constituent (up to 75%) of Clary Sage Essential Oil, linalyl acetate is able to reduce the inflammation and potential scaring caused by acne.

Its antibacterial properties also help to prevent breakouts from spreading or even occurring in the first place.

Fill a 5 ml roller bottle with jojoba oil and add a couple drops of Clary Sage. Apply it to the effected areas of your face. As a bonus, this blend will work to clear up any oily patches on your skin.

Anxiety

Asthma

Dilute to 50:50 with a carrier oil and rub it on your chest. It can also be applied at full strength on the bottoms of your feet where it enters the blood stream very quickly.

Take a warm relaxing bath using 15-20 drops of oil in a cup of Epsom salts and inhale deeply.

To prevent dandruff, hair loss, oily hair, apply a drop with each application of a hair care product.

Create a blend of 6 drops Clary Sage, 2-3 drops of rosemary, and a couple tablespoons of jojoba or other carrier oil. Massage the blend into your scalp, let it set for about an hour and then wash it out.

Seizure

Clary Sage Essential oil is very useful for relieving the after-effects or reducing the possibility of a seizure occurring. 

  • add a few drops to some Epsom Salts in a relaxing bath, 
  • diffuse it twice a day, or 
  • after a seizure, massage a 50:50 blend of Clary Sage and fractionated coconut on the back of your neck, your sinuses, chest, shoulders, abdomen and the tips of your big toes.
  • Take the same 50:50 blend in a gelatin cap once a day with a meal.  
  • In your travels, whenever you feel a seizure coming on, use an Essential Oil Inhaler filled with Clary Sage Oil and inhale deeply.

Skin Treatment

Clary Sage Essential Oil contains an ester called linalyl acetate which helps reduce inflammation and heals rashes; works on both dry and oily skin; supports natural oils produced by your body; prevents acne scarring.

It also has antibacterial properties which prevent breakouts from occurring. 

It can be mixed with a carrier oil or lotion for maximum coverage over large areas of skin.

Add a drop to each application of lotion and apply as a skin conditioner for acne, aged skin, boils, inflammations, oily skin and wrinkles. 

Add 5 drops to a green clay spa masque and use 1-2 times per week as needed.

Clary Sage Essential Oil is one of the oils that is extremely beneficial to women. 

It provides relief from bloating, cramps, food cravings, nausea, mood swings and balancing of hormones during menstruation.

For painful menstruation or to encourage regular menses, massage a 50:50 blend with a carrier oil in a clockwise direction on the lower abdomen. Follow up with the same blend in a counterclockwise direction on your back.

Take a hot aromatic bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom salts and inhale deeply.

Disperse the oil into the room using an aromatherapy essential oil diffuser.
