What is Lavandin Oil?

Let's start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Lavandin Oil

Family:  Lamiaceae (Labiatae)
Origins:  Grows in the mountainous regions of southern France where parent plants grow wild. Now grown in Spain, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Argentina.
Other Names:  Bastard lavender
Description:  A hybrid plant created by crossing true lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) with spike lavender (Lavendula latifolia). It is larger than true lavender with flowers that may be blue or grey. 
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation
Botanical Part Used: Fresh flowering tops. It has a higher yield than true lavender.

Principal Constituents:  Linalyl acetate (30-32%), linalool, cineol, camphene, pinene and other constituents.

Methods of Application


  • Possible skin sensitivity
  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Suggested Uses


The use of the essential oil lavandin to reduce preoperative anxiety in surgical patients.

Lavandin Oil has the ability to overcome anxiety, restlessness, emotional exhaustion and depression.

You can apply Lavandin directly on your forehead, around your nose, on your temples and to your solar plexus.

Diffuse 20 drops of lavandin twice daily.

Lavandin Essential Oil has a fresh, sweet, floral scent that is quite stimulating. Together with its antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, it makes for a great natural deodorant.

Add 10 drops to a 1/2 cup of Epsom salts and use it in a foot bath or massage your feet with a 50:50 blend of Lavandin and carrier oil.

It can also be added to some water and applied on surfaces or diffused in order to deodorize a room.

Digestive System

Lavandin Oil can be used to calm abdominal cramps, colic, gas, or nausea. Consume a 50:50 blend of Lavandin with a carrier oil in a gelatin capsule once a day with food.

You can also take the same 50:50 blend and massage it directly to your lower abdomen.

Emotional Balance

Lavandin Oil has antidepressant properties and is able to boost your confidence and mental strength allowing you to fight off feelings of depression and anxiety.

Lavandin has been used in clinical settings to help patients with acute depression undergoing rehabilitation.

Diffuse 20 drops of Lavandin Oil twice daily.

For topical application mix Lavandin with a carrier oil at a 50:50 concentration and apply to your temples, forehead and the back of your neck.

Create a 50:50 blend of Lavandin and carrier oil and apply it to your face, your forehead and the back of your neck.

Lavandin Oil is a vulnerary (a medicine used in the healing of wounds) and has antiseptic properties. 

Apply it undiluted to minor wounds in order to reduce bacterial, fungal as well as viral infections.

To repel insects mix 20 drops of Lavandin Oil in a cup of water and spray the area.

This oil can be used effectively by diffusion as well as topical application.

Diffuse 20 drops of lavandin twice daily.

Apply topically to the head, temples, around the nose and on the solar plexus.

Pain Management

Apply Lavandin topically to ease your pain, reduce infection and heal minor wounds. 

It can be applied undiluted to small areas of concern but for larger applications such as in the case of muscle aches and pains, lumbago, rheumatism, and sprains, a massage of 50:50 Lavandin and carrier oil will work best.

Reproductive System

Lavandin Oil can stimulate healthy menstruation as well as ease menstrual pain.

Massage your lower abdomen using Lavandin mixed with a carrier oil at a 50:50 ratio.

Respiratory System

Lavandin Oil has the ability to calm spasms of the respiratory system and is effective against conditions such as:

  • excess mucous
  • laryngitis
  • throat infections
  • whooping cough

Diffuse 20 drops twice daily

Massage the area of concern with a 50:50 blend using lavandin and carrier oil

Take an aromatic bath or foot soak with 10 to 15 drops of lavandin in a cup of Epsom salts.

Lavandin Oil is one of the oils that has the ability to make scars and other marks such as those caused by acne, boils and surgery fade away.

Lavandin can be applied undiluted but if the area of concern is large a carrier oil should be added at a 50:50 ratio prior to application.

Like its cousin True Lavender, Lavandin is very effective at treating all kinds of skin problems. Lavandin Oil is able to accelerate the healing of cuts and scrapes as well as protect them from infections. 

To treat small areas of skin you can apply Lavandin Oil directly onto minor wounds and conditions such as:

  • dandruff
  • dermatitis
  • eczema
  • inflammations
  • insect bites
  • insect repellent
  • lice
  • psoriasis
  • ringworm
  • scabies
  • sores
  • spots
  • sunburn

If the area of concern is large a carrier oil should be added at a 50:50 ratio prior to application.

Stress Management

Just like Lavender, Lavandin Oil is great for stress management and has the ability to reduce stress and help overcome emotional exhaustion and anxiety.
