What is Copaiba Oil?

Let's start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Copaiba Essential Oil

Family:  Fabaceae (Leguminosae)
Origins:  Northeast and central South America
Other Names:  Copaiba balsam, copahu balsam, copaiva, Jesuit's balsam, maracaibo balsam, para balsam. Copaifera langsdorffii and Copaifera officinalis are both copaiba.
Description:  Wild, tropical tree with many branches and thick foliage. Soft, sweet, balsamic.
Extraction:  Essential oil by dry distillation
Botanical Part Used: Resinous balsam extracted from the trunk of the tree

Principal Constituents:  Mainly sesqueterpines and caryophyllene

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Copaiba has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties which can relieve the tension in your blood vessels which may cause your blood pressure to drop.

Copaiba can be inhaled using a diffuser or consumed with an equal amount of carrier oil in a gelatin capsule.

Digestive System

Copaiba oil has been used for centuries in Europe to treat conditions such as:

Infection

For a urinary tract infection add a few drops of Copaiba to an equal amount of carrier oil and massage the affected area or consume it once a day in a gelatin capsule.

Copaiba Oil can be used to decrease inflammation anywhere it may occur in your body. 

Combine Copaiba and carrier oil at a 50:50 ratio in a bottle.

Fill a gelatin capsule with this blend and consume once a day for as long as needed.

Also, using the same blend, massage the affected area as needed.

Mouth

Copaiba Oil is a bacteriostatic agent and is effective against Streptococcus mutans which is a bacterium commonly found in the mouth. This bacterium is a large contributor to tooth decay.

Consider adding a drop of Copaiba Oil on top of your toothpaste before brushing.

tip: Also add a drop of Orange Essential Oil for a powerful whitening action.

  • Add a few drops in a 1/2 cup of Epsom salts and enjoy a hot bath to promote normal respiratory function
  • Put a few drops in a pot of boiling water, put a towel over your head and breathe deeply. This will release mucous from deep in your lungs
  • For bronchial inflammation, massage your sinus areas, neck and under cheek bones with undiluted Copaiba Oil
  • Diffuse 20 drops daily

Skin Treatment

Copaiba Oil has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and antiseptic properties which work well for skin treatments and is a welcomed addition to your regular skin care regiment.

  • Add Copaiba to a mild skin cleanser to effectively treat surface acne or help clear up other skin irritations
  • Add a couple drops to your face cleanser or spa masque to restore the skin. I recommend this green clay spa masque
  • Add 20 drops to 8 oz. of shampoos and conditioners or 1-2 drops to a single application

Copaiba also has the ability to help tighten your skin.
