What is Geranium Essential Oil?

Lets start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. 

About Geranium Essential Oil

Family:  Geraniaceae
Origins:  South Africa, as well as Reunion, Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco  
Description:  Sweet floral scent with a a hint of mint
Extraction:  The oil is obtained through steam distillation.
Botanical Part Used: Stems, leaves and flowers

Principal Constituents: The main chemical constituents of geranium oil include eugenol, geranic, citronellol, geraniol, linalool, citronellyl formate, citral, myrtenol, terpineol, methone and sabinene.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Possible skin sensitivity
  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Sensitive Skin - Should be used with caution on delicate skin; a carrier oil may be useful

It also has astringent properties which we know can assist in, not only combatting the sagging and wrinkling of your skin, but also improves the condition of:

  • blood vessels

It helps with your breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, immune system and stress levels.

Geranium Oil can be inhaled from a tissue or diffused into the room. When you breath in the aroma messages are sent to your limbic system which affects your emotions and nervous system.

Mix 5 drops with a tablespoon of jojoba oil and massage the area once or twice a day.

Candida

Candida albicans is a natural part of our microflora that commonly lives in or on our bodies, the GI tract, the mouth, and the vagina.

It becomes what we call an infection when an overgrowth happens and it gets out of control. 

Application of Geranium Essential Oil has been demonstrated in studies to help suppress this candida cell growth.

After showering, massage the oil diluted with carrier oil like coconut or primrose over the area of concern. The amount of dilution will depend on the sensitivity of the area being treated.

Deodorant

Geranium Essential Oil has antibacterial properties so it can be used as a natural deodorant to eliminate body odors. Its natural rose-like/mint smell is very pleasant and will keep you smelling fresh every day.

Geranium is ideal as a deodorant because sweating actually releases the pleasant aroma rather than eliminating it, and it lasts for a long time.

Use five drops of Geranium Oil in a spray bottle with five tablespoons of water.

Massage some Geranium oil into the soles of your feet. The oil will enter your bloodstream within minutes.

Take a drop orally in some almond milk sweetened with honey. Alternatively you can consume it in a gelatin capsule. Do not give to children under the age of 5.

Rub a drop on the affected area (dilute with a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin). You can also use it as a spot treatment by placing a couple drops of oil on the spot and covering it with some gauze.

In order to prevent breakouts, add a few drops of geranium essential oil to your moisturizer and apply to the area of concern.

A 2013 study determined that, due to its ability to reduce inflammation, Geranium Oil is more effective and safer than cholesterol lowering drugs and joint pain medications (both of which involve inflammation). 

Mix 20 drops of oil with fractionated coconut oil and rub it into your joints to ease arthritis.

Add 2-3 drops to fractionated coconut oil and consume in a gelatin capsule.

Geranium Oil also has antiseptic properties which speed up the healing process and can treat many skin problems such as:
