Unlike conventional medical approaches, using essential oils in joint pain remedies can provide quick relief that is free of virtually all undesirable side effects.
You have probably heard that alternating both hot and cold therapies is very effective in addressing pain and inflammation but did you know that Essential Oils can mimic this effect. (Some oils are hot while others are cold*)
Joint pain can have many different triggers such as age, over exercise, being overweight, standing for too long etc. Fortunately most if not all of them will respond favorably to similar treatment.

There are many blends that can be effective as general joint pain remedies so lets start with one of them before we talk about specific types of joint problems.
I recently learned about a cooling essential oil blend that I found to be very effective for general joint pain including arthritis pain relief.
This blend creates a cooling sensation in the area is very relaxing and a nice alternative to the heat you get from oils such as Wintergreen. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Here are a few essential oils with heating and anti-inflammatory properties that will help reduce inflammation:
Blend the following oils with 2 ounces of your favorite lotion or carrier oil and apply the solution to the affected joint as needed:
This topic is of special interest to me as I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and elbows. Here is a blend that should help when you really need it.
Apply the following blend topically 2 - 4 times daily:

As Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease there are other blends that can be taken internally to address the underlying problem more thoroughly.

For sprains like a sprained ankle you should immediately apply Peppermint Oil and ice to counteract the swelling. It is advisable to see your health care professional to evaluate the extent of the injury in case more serious damage has been done.
The pain can be controlled immediately by applying Peppermint Essential Oil or one of the pain blends I speak about on my Pain Management page. For small areas the oil can be applied undiluted but for large areas like your hip or back I recommend diluting it 50:50 with a carrier oil.
If you are concerned about bruising apply Helichrysum Essential Oil as soon as possible.
After the swelling has receded (perhaps 24 hours later) you can switch from cold to heat using a hot moist pad and some Wintergreen Essential Oil.
Place a drop of Helichrysum on the painful area (do not massage) and then apply the following blend undiluted several times a day:
