Joint pain can have many different triggers such as age, over exercise, being overweight, standing for too long etc. Fortunately most if not all of them will respond favorably to similar treatment.

General Joint Pain Remedies

There are many blends that can be effective as general joint pain remedies so lets start with one of them before we talk about specific types of joint problems.

I recently learned about a cooling essential oil blend that I found to be very effective for general joint pain including arthritis pain relief.

This blend creates a cooling sensation in the area is very relaxing and a nice alternative to the heat you get from oils such as Wintergreen. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Specific Joint Pain Remedies

Bursitis

Bursitis can be managed through regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, stretching, controlling stress, using high quality essential oils and taking anti-inflammatory supplements.

Here are a few essential oils with heating and anti-inflammatory properties that will help reduce inflammation:

Use either Helichrysum or German Chamomile in a 50:50 blend with a carrier oil of your choice.

Blend the following oils with 2 ounces of your favorite lotion or carrier oil and apply the solution to the affected joint as needed:

Osteoarthritis

This topic is of special interest to me as I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and elbows. Here is a blend that should help when you really need it.

Apply the following blend topically 2 - 4 times daily:

Take a gelatin capsule (available from Amazon) containing 1 drop of Nutmeg with 4 drops each of the following oils. Consume this blend 1 to 3 times daily:

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Here is a cooling anti-inflammatory blend to massage painful joints:

As Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease there are other blends that can be taken internally to address the underlying problem more thoroughly.

Sprains

For sprains like a sprained ankle you should immediately apply Peppermint Oil and ice to counteract the swelling. It is advisable to see your health care professional to evaluate the extent of the injury in case more serious damage has been done.

The pain can be controlled immediately by applying Peppermint Essential Oil or one of the pain blends I speak about on my Pain Management page. For small areas the oil can be applied undiluted but for large areas like your hip or back I recommend diluting it 50:50 with a carrier oil.

If you are concerned about bruising apply Helichrysum Essential Oil as soon as possible.

To reduce the inflammation and increase circulation to the wound apply some Cypress Essential Oil or 2 drops each of Peppermint and Frankincense mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of carrier oil.

After the swelling has receded (perhaps 24 hours later) you can switch from cold to heat using a hot moist pad and some Wintergreen Essential Oil.

Tennis Elbow

Place a drop of Helichrysum on the painful area (do not massage) and then apply the following blend undiluted several times a day:
