What is Marjoram Essential Oil?

Let's start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Marjoram Essential Oil

Family:  Lamiaceae (Labiatae)
Origins:  Native to the Mediterranean area. Major suppliers include France, Tusisia, Morocco, Egypt, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Germany.
Other Names:  Knotted marjoram, sweet marjoram.
Description:  A tender, bushy perennial cultivated as an annual in colder climates. Dark green leaves and small grey-white flowers in clusters. 
Extraction:  Essential oil by steam distillation.
Botanical Part Used: Dried herb in flower.

Principal Constituents:  Terpenes, terpineol, sabinenes, linalool, linalyl acetate, ocimene, cadinene, geranyl acetate, and others.

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Possible skin sensitivity
  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution

Suggested Uses

Arthritis

Marjoram Essential Oil can help ease the pain of arthritis, neuralgia and rheumatism.

It also helps to prevent debilitating conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. 

Apply the oil mixed with an equal amount of carrier oil to the affected area.  (see more in the section on pain below)

Depression

Marjoram Essential Oil, known as "the happiness herb" is a great depression remedy because it has calming properties which effectively target the nervous and cardiovascular systems of your body.

Diffuse 20 drops into your environment to promote love and positive feelings as well as to relax and soothe your nerves.

You can take Marjoram internally by using it in recipes that call for the dried herb. 1 drop of oil is equivalent to 2 tsp. of herbs. (make sure to use clinical grade oil if you are taking internally)

Relieve tension and stress by applying a couple drops to the back of your neck. Dilute first with some carrier oil such as fractionated coconut

In order to treat exhaustion, insomnia, stress and nervous tension:

  • Massage a couple drops of Marjoram Essential Oil on the back of your neck and on your temples.
  • Massage your hands and the bottoms of your feet with a couple drops.
  • Diffuse 20 drops into your environment or take a hot aromatic bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts and inhale deeply.

Digestive System

Marjoram Essential Oil can be blended (50:50) with a carrier oil and used in an abdominal massage to ease the symptoms of:

  • colic
  • constipation
  • colon infection
  • dyspepsia
  • diarrhea
  • gas

  • Inflamed intestines

Emotional Balance

Diffuse 20 drops into your environment to promote love and positive feelings as well as to relax and soothe your nerves.

You can take Marjoram internally by using it in recipes that call for the dried herb. 1 drop of oil is equivalent to 2 tsp. of herbs. (make sure to use clinical grade oil if you are taking internally)

Marjoram can be diffused in your bedroom for a great night’s sleep or take a hot bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom salts before bed.

For headache or migraine place 3 drops directly on a cool damp compress and place it on your forehead and the back of your neck

Immune System

Marjoram Essential Oil can be used to strengthen your immune system. Add it to your cooking whenever appropriate. 1 drop of oil is equivalent to 2 tsp. of dried Marjoram.

As an alternative you can mix the oil with a carrier oil (50:50) and take in a gelatin capsule daily with food

(make sure to use clinical grade oil if you are taking internally)

Other Oils for Immune System

Insomnia

As we discussed under the category "Emotional Balance" above, Marjoram Essential Oil can help with nervous tension and stress related conditions. For the same reason, it is very effective in dealing with insomnia.

Before going to bed massage your feet and hands with Marjoram Oil and put 20 drops in a diffuser to run in the bedroom while you sleep.

On a personal note I prefer Lavender for this but that is just me. See what works best for you.

Pain Management

Marjoram Essential Oil is great for addressing pain without the harmful side effects that can occur from many other analgesic pain relievers. It is known to target specific muscle groups of your body and works to relax them. 

Marjoram has the ability to soothe pain from many conditions such as:

  • colds
  • fevers
  • headaches
  • inflammation
  • painful joints
  • lower back 
  • overexertion
  • sprains
  • strains
  • toothaches

For smaller areas you can apply 1-2 drops directly on the area of concern.

For larger areas it is advisable to dilute with a carrier oil at a 50:50 ratio prior to application.

Respiratory System

Marjoram Essential Oil can help control spasms such as asthma, bronchitis, cough, etc

Diffuse 20 drops into your environment or take a hot aromatic bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom salts and inhale deeply.

Marjoram can be diffused to promote healthy respiratory functions.

Snoring

Marjoram Essential Oil has been used as a snoring remedy for many years because of its expectorant and sinus clearing properties.

It is known as a treatment for sleep apnea which can be a cause of snoring.

Diffuse 20 drops into your environment or take a hot aromatic bath with 10-15 drops in a cup of Epsom Salts and inhale deeply.

Marjoram can be diffused to promote healthy respiratory functions.

Add 2 – 3 drops of Marjoram to a glass of water and gargle before going to bed.

Putt a drop on a q-tip and apply to the underside of your nose at bed time.

Stress Management
