What is Orange Essential Oil?

Lets start with some basic information; a brief description of where the oil comes from, what it contains and how it is obtained. The following information is provided by Bill Fifield in his book "Integrated Guide to Essential Oils & Aromatherapy".

About Orange Essential Oil

Family:   Rutaceae
Origins:  Native to China, but extensively cultivated especially in California and Florida, around the Mediterranean. The oil comes mainly from Israel, Cyprus, Brazil and North America.
Other Names:  Sweet Orange, China orange, Portugal orange
Description:  An evergreen tree, smaller than bitter orange and less hardy. Orange fruit.
Extraction:  cold expressed
Botanical Part Used:  ripe or almost ripe peel of fruit

Principal Constituents:  Over 90% monoterpenes, mainly limonene. Also contains bergapten for some phototoxicity.

Orange Essential Oil has been effectively used by the Chinese to treat anorexia, colds, coughs and digestive disorders.

Orange oil has been used extensively in cosmetics, perfumes, detergents, soaps and as flavoring in food.

It is known for its positive effects on various  stress related conditions, nervous conditions, digestive issues and headaches.

Orange Essential Oil Is:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • antidepressant
  • antispasmodic
  • antiseptic
  • aphrodisiac
  • carminative
  • diuretic

Methods of Application

Caution:

  • Consult your physician before using if pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition
  • Avoid your eyes, mucous membranes and sensitive skin
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Avoid direct sunlight or UV rays up to 12 hours after applying
  • Aromatically - Can be inhaled or diffused into the air
  • Topical - Can be applied to the skin (may require dilution with a carrier oil)
  • Internal - Can be taken internally in foods or beverages
  • Neat - Can be taken at full strength without dilution
  • Photo Sensitive - Must avoid direct sunlight for 12 hours after application

Anti Aging

Effect of aromatherapy on patients with Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we examined the curative effects of aromatherapy in dementia in 28 elderly people, 17 of whom had Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Orange Essential Oil works very well with other oils because of its rich supply of antioxidants. Oranges are well known for their ability to protect your cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.

In fact, according to a study of the use of rosemary and lemon essential oils in the morning, and lavender and orange in the evening, aromatherapy was found to have some potential for improving cognitive function, especially in AD patients.

The D-Limonene content of Orange Essential Oil has been found in studies to actually kill off some cancer cells so it may be a good idea to consume this oil on a regular basis.

For an even easier solution rub a couple drops into your palms or on a Kleenex and inhale deeply. You will find this will calm your nerves and relax your mind.
